Say Hello to Sadie!
Pete, Carolyn & Sadie out for a
spin.
No ranch is complete without a standard donkey. Our Sadie is the matriarch
of the herd. She thinks she's as cute as the minis, as short as the minis,
and as playful as the minis. It's a funny story why Sadie is with us here
at the Quarter Moon. Years ago, I called a friend of mine Dr. Tex Taylor
to ask if he knew anyone who had a miniature donkey for sale. We were wanting
to enlarge our herd. He told me that Judy Martens, a retired small animal
and research vet, had a yearling that was very nice and I needed to see
her. He also said that I needed to meet Judy. "You and she will hit
it off". Was that an understatement! On my first trip
to meet her, we became instant friends. I couldn't even recall why I was there.
Oh! To look at her yearling. That yearling was Muffin which I bought and
later bought her mother Tina. I bought something else too that day-a dear
friendship and a nudge to start driving donkeys. Before I knew it, Judy had me in training with her mini
mule Twist. Twist would make anyone want to throw away the Lincoln Towncar
and try this ride on for size. She's a wonderful mule and Judy and she
have won many awards and driven many "happy trails" together.
After Judy and Twist taught me the ropes (or rather the reins), Judy's next
comment was "Now we need to find you a good driving donkey". I mistakingly
thought that meant a miniature. Before I knew it, Judy and her husband Ron
(another research vet at Texas A&M), Pete and I were headed out to take a
look at Sadie. Sadie was a perfect match for me. She is gentle,
experienced, and when driven likes to step out and go. I like that. But,
the question has always remained, how did I go from one conversation
regarding buying a miniature donkey, to spending wonderful fall afternoons
together here at the ranch driving Twist and Sadie with Judy and our
friends? Luck, I guess!
